
Making Infrared Heat Safe for the Bathroom
Heating a bathroom is a bit of a balancing act. You want it to feel cozy and warm, but you’re dealing with water and electricity in the same room. That’s why we build everything to IP44 standards. In plain English? It means the heater is sealed tight enough that splashes from any direction won’t get inside. We can’t have moisture hitting the electrical terminals—that’s a recipe for a short circuit, and nobody wants that.
Dealing with the Glare
Here is the tricky part: standard infrared lamps are bright. Like, “blind you in the shower” bright. It’s a harsh glare that’s tough on the eyes, and it’s especially bad for babies. We fixed this by tweaking the light spectrum. Instead of just letting the lamp run wild, we use special quartz glass filters or coatings on the tube. This blocks out the blinding visible light but lets the heat waves slide right through. The result? A soft, gentle glow. You get all the warmth without feeling like you’re staring into a spotlight.
The Trade-offs of a Sealed Box
To get that IP44 rating, we use heavy-duty gaskets and moisture-resistant polymers. It keeps the water out, but it also traps the air. Because the unit is sealed, heat builds up inside the housing much faster than it would in a regular heater. This is where the math gets important. We have to be really precise with the internal thermal fuses. If the housing is too cramped, the lamp will just keep clicking on and off to keep from burning itself out. It’s a delicate balance.
Getting it Installed Right
These units pull a lot of power the moment you flip the switch, so they need their own dedicated circuit. We also use heat-resistant wiring because the last thing you want is insulation melting during a long, relaxing session. And since we’re in a wet zone, grounding is everything. There’s no room for error here. We always recommend a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). It’s a simple piece of kit that kills the power the millisecond it detects a leak. It’s just the smartest way to keep everyone safe.
