
Keeping it Warm Without Blinding Your Guests
When you’re putting together infrared lamps for a bathroom or an outdoor pergola, you run into a classic tug-of-war: you want a ton of heat, but you don’t want a blinding light. It’s a tricky balance. You need enough power to actually feel warm when you’re standing in a drafty garden or a steamy bathroom, but you can’t have a light so bright it hurts to look at. This is especially important for babies, whose eyes are way more sensitive than ours. The secret is in the glow. Most standard short-wave lamps are just… bright. Too bright. They give off this harsh white light that feels more like a lab than a home. To fix that, we tweak the spectrum. By using specific quartz glass and some clever internal coatings, we filter out the UV rays and that piercing white light. Instead, you get a soft, cozy amber glow. It feels more natural, and more importantly, it keeps the heat on your skin without stressing out your retinas. Dealing with the elements Bathrooms and pergolas are tough environments. Between the steam and the sudden temperature drops, equipment takes a beating. If a drop of cold water hits a scorching hot tube, the whole thing can crack. That’s why we use sealed quartz envelopes to keep the filaments safe from oxidation. We also pack these into IP-rated housings. It’s basically an insurance policy to make sure your electrical connections don’t fry the moment the humidity spikes. A few things to keep in mind Here is the trade-off: because these eye-safe lamps don’t run as hot on the surface as those industrial-strength tubes, you might not get that “instant” blast of heat the second you flip the switch. It’s a bit more gradual. Because of that, I always recommend using a decent thermostat. You don’t want to accidentally bake a small enclosure. And if you’re squeezing these into a tight ceiling grid, just double-check your airflow. You want the heat going down toward the people, not soaking into your ceiling materials. The best part? If your voltage and wattage match your existing ballast, these are pretty much drop-in replacements. Easy.
