
Why Your Pergola Heater Keeps Shorting Out (And How to Actually Fix It)
If you’ve ever put infrared heaters in an outdoor pergola, you know the deal. You’re basically asking your electronics to survive a war against humidity and wild temperature swings. Most people think the heating element is the part that gives out first. But honestly? It’s usually the lead-wire seal. That tiny connection point is where the real battle is won or lost. If that seal lets go, moisture sneaks in, the wires oxidize, and—pop—you’ve got a short circuit. The problem with “cheap” seals A lot of the heaters you find on the market use basic adhesives or some loose gaskets. It looks fine at first. But these heaters get hot. Like, “bake the sealant until it’s brittle” hot. I see this all the time with those generic, white-label products. They just put a dab of silicone on the connection and call it a day. After a few weeks of heating up and cooling down, that silicone shrinks and cracks. Now you’ve got a tiny straw that sucks rainwater right into the wiring. Then the wires burn out, and you’re left in the cold. Doing it the right way To actually stop this, you need something a bit more heavy-duty. We’re talking high-temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone or specialized resins that don’t even flinch at 200°C. It’s a more precise process. You have to strip and crimp the wires perfectly before injecting the potting compound. This creates a tight, airtight seal. It keeps the rain out, but it’s still flexible enough that the wires can expand and contract without ripping away from the terminal. It’s a delicate balance. If the seal is too rigid, the quartz tube will expand and just snap the wire clean off. Too soft? The rain wins. The trade-off Here’s the catch: a real, waterproof seal takes more time to build and costs more. It also means you can’t really “repair” the lead-wire if it breaks—you’ll have to replace the whole head. But for an outdoor setup, it’s the only way to make sure your heater survives more than one winter. One last tip: no matter how good the seal is, always use a proper drip loop in your installation. You don’t want water pooling right at the connection point. A little bit of planning there saves a lot of headaches later.
