
Getting the Heat Right (Without Blinding Everyone) in Bathroom Heaters
Designing infrared lamps for bathrooms is a bit of a tug-of-war. You want that instant, cozy heat to kill the chill of a damp room, but you don’t want to feel like you’re staring into the sun. This is especially true when babies are involved—standard halogen tubes are just way too bright for those little eyes. Dealing with the glare Most short-wave infrared lamps blast out a harsh, white light. It’s annoying and, frankly, too much. To fix this, we use a special spectral filter or a coated quartz envelope. Think of it as a shield. It blocks out the aggressive visible light that strains your eyes but lets the warmth pass right through. You get all the heat, none of the blinding flash. It’s a much gentler experience, which is exactly what you want when you’re bathing a baby. Keeping the water out Bathrooms are basically steam rooms. And as we know, water and electricity aren’t friends. That’s why we build these to IPX4 standards. In plain English? It means the housing and seals are tight enough to block splashes from any angle. We also use high-temp silicone gaskets around the mounts. They stop steam from sneaking in and eating away at the wiring. The tricky parts We use quartz glass for the heating element because it doesn’t crack when it goes from cold to hot instantly. But quartz is brittle. If you’re installing these in a busy spot, make sure your brackets are rock solid. One good shake or a hard bump, and that tube could snap. Then there’s the power. A higher wattage tube warms the room faster, but it also makes the guard get hotter. To keep things safe, we pair them with perforated aluminum reflectors. This spreads the heat out so you don’t get those scary “hot spots” that could burn someone’s skin. And a pro tip: use a dedicated moisture-resistant switch. It’s a small detail, but it keeps the whole thing from shorting out in the middle of a steamy shower.
