
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters from Becoming a Hazard
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom isn’t as simple as just plugging it in. You’ve got steam everywhere, water splashing around, and surfaces that love to conduct electricity. It’s a recipe for disaster if you aren’t careful. To make sure everything stays safe, we obsess over three things: the housing, the connections, and the grounding. Dealing with the steam Here’s the thing: standard lamps hate moisture. If steam gets into the circuitry, they’ll short out. Simple as that. To stop this, we use IP-rated seals to keep the guts of the heater dry. We stick to powder-coated aluminum or non-conductive polymers for the casing so the whole thing doesn’t accidentally become “live.” We also use specific gaskets that can handle the constant switching between freezing and boiling without cracking. Because if that seal goes? Moisture hits the terminals, and you’ve got a serious problem. The wiring side of things Most heaters fail at the connection point. It’s the weakest link. To fix that, we use reinforced ceramic insulators for the lamp holders. It stops the electricity from jumping—or arcing—where it shouldn’t. And please, forget about standard PVC wiring. It melts. We use silicone-insulated leads instead. They can take the heat and the dampness without getting brittle or exposing bare copper. The “just in case” safety net Even with a perfect seal, you still need a backup plan. Every unit gets hard-wired to a dedicated ground. Plus, we make sure there’s an RCD or GFCI in the circuit. It’s a lifesaver. If the system detects even a tiny leak, it kills the power in milliseconds. But there is a catch. If you seal the unit too tight or use insulation that’s too thick, you trap the heat inside. If the air can’t move, you’ll cook the electronics and kill the lamp’s lifespan. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between a waterproof seal and enough breathing room to keep things cool. Get the wiring right, and you can just enjoy the warmth without worrying about the sparks.
