
Why we put our bathroom heaters through a “humidity hell” test
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got wild temperature swings and thick, heavy steam clinging to everything. If a mirror infrared heater isn’t built specifically for that chaos, the quartz tube gets cloudy or the electrical parts just start to rust. We aren’t interested in guessing how long these things will last. Instead, we throw them into a climate chamber and force them to age. Fast.
The problem with steam
Most of these heaters use shortwave infrared lamps. They get incredibly hot to give you that instant warmth the second you flip the switch. But here’s the catch: when that scorching lamp hits a humid room, condensation forms on the cooler parts of the housing. That moisture creates a path for electricity to leak where it shouldn’t. That’s why we run these damp-heat tests. We want to see exactly where the seal gives up. We’re looking for any sign of oxidation on the filaments or the reflector coating starting to flake.
Pushing it to the breaking point
We don’t just do a quick quality check. We put these units through cycles of intense heat and 95% humidity. It’s a stress test, plain and simple. We’re hunting for the “burn out” point. If the seal between the quartz glass and the metal cap is off by even a tiny fraction of a millimeter, moisture seeps in. Once that happens, the halogen gas leaks out or the filament burns out way too early.It’s a brutal process, but it’s the only way to be sure.
Balancing heat and survival
Designing for a bathroom is a bit of a tightrope walk. You want high-wattage lamps because nobody likes a lukewarm bathroom, but more heat means the materials expand and contract more every time you turn it on. That constant movement, paired with the moisture, can snap a cheap tube. High-grade quartz helps a lot, but it isn’t magic. The housing still has to vent steam properly so the lamp doesn’t just “take a beating” from trapped moisture. We test until we know the unit can handle the reality of a steamy morning shower without quitting on you.
