
Getting Your Bathroom Heater Wattage Right
When you’re picking out ceiling infrared lamps, your first instinct might be to just go for the biggest number on the box. But that’s actually a mistake. Think of it more like filling a glass of water. If you don’t use enough power, you’re still shivering in the shower. If you go way overboard, you’re just wasting electricity—and you might actually burn out the lamp because it’s overheating in its own housing.
Finding Your Sweet Spot
It mostly comes down to how much space you’re trying to warm up. If you’ve got a tiny powder room or a small ensuite (we’re talking under 4m²), a 400W to 600W lamp is usually plenty. It hits you with a nice burst of warmth the second you flip the switch without turning the room into a sauna. For those bigger bathrooms—the 6m² to 10m² range—you’ll want to step up to 800W or 1200W. More space means more walls and vents for the heat to leak out of. One quick heads-up: check your wiring. A 1200W lamp pulls a lot of juice. If your wires are too thin, you’ll get a voltage drop, and your expensive new lamp will probably die way sooner than it should.
Where You Put It Matters
Placement is everything. Infrared heat travels in a straight line—it doesn’t float around like steam. If you mount a powerful lamp too low, you’ll end up with a “hot spot” that feels like you’re standing too close to a campfire. It’s uncomfortable. Try to keep at least 2.2 meters of clearance between the lamp and the floor. Also, keep in mind that shortwave infrared heats you, not the air. That’s why you feel warm instantly even if the room is freezing. But since it doesn’t really warm up the walls, one giant heater in the middle of the room often feels “patchy.” You’re better off with a few lower-wattage lamps spread across the ceiling.
The Catch: Power vs. Lifespan
Here’s the thing about high wattage: it means the filament gets incredibly hot. When you cram a high-powered lamp into a tight ceiling fixture without enough airflow, that heat has nowhere to go. It starts creeping back into the socket, which can melt the insulation or just snap the filament. Before you buy, just make sure your fixture is actually rated for the wattage you’re plugging into it. It’ll save you a trip back to the hardware store.
