
Don’t Let Your Ceiling Become a Heater
If you’re putting infrared heaters in a busy spot—think locker rooms or long hallways—you’ve got to be careful about where they actually sit. Here’s the thing: these heaters don’t just warm up the air. They send out waves of heat that hit whatever is in their path. If you mount them too close to the ceiling, you’re basically building a heat trap. The “Hot Pocket” Problem Heat travels in a straight line. When a heater is shoved too close to the ceiling, that surface just soaks up all the energy and bounces it right back. It creates this stagnant Pocket of superheated air. I’ve seen it happen way too often—you look up and the ceiling is starting to discolor or, even worse, warp. To keep that from happening, give your units some breathing room. Usually, 0.5 to 1.0 meters is the sweet spot, but it depends on how powerful your lamps are. Watch Your Materials High-output lamps put out a ton of heat. If your ceiling is made of PVC or anything that catches fire easily, you’re playing a dangerous game with scorching. You have to look at the beam angle of the lamp. A narrow beam is a bit more forgiving, but those wide-angle flood lamps? They need plenty of space. Otherwise, your ceiling ends up acting like a giant radiator, which isn’t what you want. The Trade-off If you’re dealing with low ceilings, you can’t just jam a high-wattage lamp in there. That’s a fire hazard. Instead, go with lower-wattage lamps. Yeah, you’ll probably need more of them to cover the room, and that means a bit more wiring work upfront. But it’s worth it. It stops those annoying “hot spots” where someone standing right under the lamp is roasting while everyone else is shivering. Plus, make sure your brackets are sturdy enough for those quartz tubes. You don’t want your heaters sagging over time.
